Learn how to use MaruMori and study Japanese effectively

How to climb a mountain of reviews. AKA how to come back after a break.

A couple different strategies:

If you accidentally take on a few too many lessons, or if you're coming back after a break, the mountains of reviews waiting for you can be, well, mountainous.

Break it down

If you don't find the number itself too discouraging, then we recommend simply breaking it down into chunks and doing smaller review sessions of 25, 50, or 100 items, rather than trying to tackle 500+ items in a single session.

Demote

If you're someone who just can't stand to see a million reviews awaiting them, then there is always the option of demotion.

We would recommend demoting the items that are level 7 or lower, as it's least likely that you are going to still have those in your memory. The higher level ones, you might still want to try and tackle, just to see if you still remember them!

To demote items, navigate to Study Lists > select the list you have reviews from > Manage > select the items you want to demote (you can also select the entire list by ticking the box beside "index", or hold SHIFT to select ranges) > click the three dots at the top right > demote to SRS level 0.

This will throw the items you selected back into your lessons queue and get them out of your reviews. Hurray for a clean slate!

Some tips and tricks

Avoid excessive lesson counts

One of the biggest factors that leads to big review piles is completing too many lessons, too fast. Try and keep your daily lesson count manageable, and avoid going too far above the 10-20 new lessons range.

Avoid excessive review counts

The same kind of goes for reviews! Given the nature of SRS, your reviews will eventually all come back and stack up. This can lead to hundreds of reviews per day. If you ever feel overwhelmed, take a break from doing new lessons for a few days, and the daily review amount should dwindle relatively fast!

Another option some users like to keep track of is checking how many beginner (level 1-4) items you have. For most people, you'd probably want it not to go over 100 beginner items, as that would mean you're likely struggling with a few of them (and these keep coming back frequently!).

Optimize your review settings

There are many SRS settings that can help speed up your reviews and make grinding out those big sessions much easier:

  • b

Lightning mode - Automatically skips the backside of a given item, and moves immediately to the next on a correct answer only

  • b

Keep siblings together - Puts the reading and meaning of a given item back-to-back in your reviews, meaning that you'll complete full reviews more efficiently

  • b

Flip mode - Removes the need to type out meaning/reading and simply allows you to mark an item as correct or wrong with a button or a hotkey

  • b

Highest level first - Gives you your highest level review items first, letting you potentially get the easier reviews out of the way

Hotkeys

Did you know you can assign hotkeys for various SRS session commands? You can set hotkeys for:

  • b

    Undo

  • b

    Unblur spoilers

  • b

    Suspend Item

  • b

    Show answer (flip mode)

  • b

    Correct (flip mode)

  • b

    Wrong (flip mode)

  • b

    Play audio

  • b

    Report issue

  • b

    Mark as known

Hopefully, these save you on time spent clicking!
