Learn how to use MaruMori and study Japanese effectively

Welcome to MaruMori (how the site works)

Welcome to MaruMori (how the site works)

Hey there! We're glad to have you!

In this series of onboarding articles, we'll introduce you to the main areas of MaruMori, and talk a bit about the different ways you can use the site to reach your language-learning goals!

Navigating MaruMori (site overview)

The home page

Grammar Lesson

This is your glorious homepage! From here, you can navigate to all of your main study tools and get an overview of your stats.

Adventure

Grammar Lesson

The adventure map is where all of our main content is. This includes grammar lessons, reading exercises, and vocab/kanji unlocks. If you want to work through our content the intended way, following the adventure track is the way to go!

Note : Each island corresponds roughly to a level of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).

From here, you can navigate to whatever level of content you'd like, or simply check out each island and browse around!

Study lists

Grammar Lesson

On the study list page, you can view all your current study lists for vocabulary, kanji, and grammar! These are essentially lists of items that you can drill flashcard-style using our SRS (spaced repetition system).

By default, you'll only see the "MaruMori - Kanji and Vocabulary" and "MaruMori - Grammar" lists here, but you can add more lists by navigating to the bottom of the page and either creating a new custom list or grabbing a pre-made one!

Resources

Grammar Lesson

The resources drop-down contains a bunch of useful stuff! For more details about the study tools, minigames, etc., check out the related articles.

Profile

Grammar Lesson

Your profile is how you can show off your unique style to the world! From the profile page, you can set your profile picture and banner, view your achievements and certificates, as well as see some basic stats about how many vocab/kanji/grammar points you know!

Statistics

Grammar Lesson

On the statistics page, you can see more detailed data regarding your studies! This includes time studied, accuracy, items known, and plenty more!

Settings

The settings page is where you can, well, change your settings! This is where you'll find your public API key, linking functions with other platforms, SRS settings, and can change your password/timezone (+ more!).

Using the site

Like I mentioned, there's no one way to use MaruMori, but if you're not sure where to start, I'll run you through the basic flow of our main content!

Adventure tiles -> SRS lessons -> SRS reviews -> Repeat?

This is the main idea! You'll start in Adventure, on whatever island is appropriate for your level, and completing lessons there will unlock grammar/vocabulary/kanji for you to study.

For instance, grammar lessons have a "mark as completed" button at the bottom. Hitting this will unlock any associated grammar points and send them to your lessons queue in our grammar SRS.

Grammar Lesson

Vocabulary and kanji are unlocked in a similar way via the "unlock" tiles in Adventure!

Grammar Lesson

Note : If you're on the introduction island (the Isle of New Beginnings), there are many tiles that don't unlock anything. So don't panic if you don't see any items coming up on your homescreen!

Once you've unlocked some kanji/vocabulary/grammar, simply navigate to your home page, and click on one of these buttons to start your lessons!

Grammar Lesson

Note : if you unlocked some vocab/kanji/grammar, but still see 0/0 here, this means you've already hit your daily lessons limit! You can increase your daily lesson limit via the Study List page. For more info, see the related article below.

Once you've done the "lesson" for a given item, it goes into your "review" queue. This is where you'll be tested on it, for real! We always recommend doing these as soon as you can after they pop up. For more information on review timings, see the related article below.

Once you've done your reviews, you're free to study more if you'd like, or call it for the day! It all depends on how much time you have, and what kind of pace you're aiming for.

Note : The pace we recommend for most users is to do one grammar lesson/reading exercise tile per day, in addition to their vocab/kanji/grammar SRS lessons and reviews. For more information on pacing, see the related article below.
