SRS (3) - Lessons and reviews (kanji/vocab)

Kanji/vocab SRS lessons

There are two sides to an SRS system: lessons and reviews. If you're starting a session from your home screen, and you have both lessons and reviews available, you'll be prompted to select which one you'd like to do:

Lessons are where an item is first presented to you. They show you all of the details about a given item, like meanings, readings, and various info. The lesson of an item will look like this (for vocabulary):

If your lesson session has more than one item, you'll see your progress reflected at the top, up here:

If you learn five items, or have reached the end of your lesson queue, you'll be prompted to test your knowledge with a quiz. This quiz looks just like your reviews, but is technically part of the lesson. It's just a quick, low-stakes check, where you can confirm you've learned an item correctly.

Kanji/vocab SRS reviews

Lessons are important and all, but who are we kidding? Reviews are where the real magic happens. This is where you get to test your knowledge of a given item consistently over time .

As an example, a vocabulary meaning review looks like this:

In the text field, simply type the word's meaning, and if you got it right, you'll be greeted with a happy green bar, and have a chance to review the item below:

Note that when you correctly answer an item's meaning, the reading information will be hidden by default (and vice versa). You can click on the blurred info to unhide it if you wish, but we recommend testing yourself as honestly as possible!

Then, it's rinse and repeat for the item's reading (if it has one), and just like that, you've completed a review. Yay!

Note : We automatically convert romaji input to kana for reading fields. No need to switch to a Japanese keyboard!

Item progress and review intervals

If you consistently get an item correct in your reviews, you will level it up! You can see how many items you have at each level here, on your home page:

Note : If you ever get an item wrong, it will revert to a Beginner-level item, no matter what level it was previously.

Our review intervals on MaruMori are as follows:

4 hours -> 8 hours -> 1 day (23h) -> 2 days (47h) -> 1 week (167h) -> 2 weeks (335h) -> 1 month (719h) -> 4 months (2879h)

Levels

  Once you complete the 2-day interval , you'll have leveled an item to Novice !

• 

  Completing the 2-week interval will level an item to Intermediate !

• 

  Completing the 1-month interval will level an item to Expert !

• 

  Completing the 4-month interval will level an item to Master !

Tip : Completing your reviews quickly after they come up is an essential part of successful SRSing. This is especially true for the first two intervals (4 and 8 hours), as this is the period where you need the most reinforcement. For this reason, many learners choose to do their lessons in the morning, so that they can do their 4 and 8-hour reviews throughout the day!
